In 2009, eight teens age 16-19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries according to the CDC.

In the State of Ohio in 2010:

  • 124 people between the ages of 16-20 were killed in traffic accidents - 73 of those killed were drivers.
  • There were 16,371 teenagers injured - 10,763 were drivers.
  • Teen drivers were involved in 67,829 crashes - 45,152 of them (66.7%) were determined to be at fault.

National Data for 2009:

  • Motor vehicle crashes remain the number one cause of death among American teens.  Crashes account for 35% of all deaths of 16-19 year olds followed by homicide at 16% and suicide at 12%.
  • Across the U.S., 3,466 teens lost their life in crashes - down 15% from 2008.
  • Sixty percent of teenage passenger deaths occurred in crashes in which another teenager was driving.
  • The crash rate per mile driven among 16-19 year-olds is 4 times the risk for older drivers. Risk is highest at age 16.  In fact, the crash rate per mile driven for 16 year olds is twice as high as it is for 18-19 year olds.
  • Fifty-five percent of teenage motor vehicle deaths occurred on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 
  • Half of teenage motor vehicle deaths occurred between 6 pm and 3 am.
  • About 2 out of every 3 teenagers killed in motor vehicle crashes were males.
