2012 Horse Safety & Ethics Program
Thursday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fairgrounds in Building A
All 4-H members taking equine projects for the first time are required to participate in a mandatory one-time horse safety and ethics program. Members who have not previously completed the Horse Safety & Ethics program are required to purchase the Horse Safety resource book (#191R) and attend a 2-hour training with a parent or legal guardian.
The training will only be offered once this year. This training is a requirement to show and participate in the 4-H equine program. Failure to complete the training will result in the member’s ineligibility to participate in any 4-H equine events. This applies to all horse, mule, donkey and miniature horse projects. Though attendance is strongly encouraged, members taking the Horseless Horse project (#173) are exempt from this requirement.
Equine Possession Date
May 31 is the possession date for all equine animals this year.
4-H Horse Identification Form/Health Record
Lease Guidelines: Horse
Horse Identification Form/Health Record, lease agreements and negative Coggins test results must be delivered to the Warren County Extension office by 4:30 p.m. on May 31, 2012
Special Note about Coggins Tests
All horses must have PROOF of negative Coggins test results submitted by May 31. “Blood drawn” is not an acceptable substitute. Plan now to have your horse tested early enough to have results before the deadline.
Remember, spring is a busy time for local veterinarians and the ODA. Tests can be delayed several weeks, so plan ahead.
Mandatory Helmet Use Policy
All youth 19 years and under, participating in any 4-H equestrian activity, are required to wear properly fitted protective headgear which meets or exceeds current ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)/SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) standards with the chin harness securely fastened at all times while riding or driving an equine.
It is the responsibility of the rider, or the parent or guardian of the youth participant, to make sure that the headgear worn complies with appropriate safety standards for protective headgear intended for equestrian use, and is properly fitted and in good condition. The Ohio 4-H Horse Program, Show Committees, Officials, Extension Personnel and Volunteer Leaders are not responsible for checking headgear worn for such compliance.
The Ohio 4-H Horse Program, Show Committees, Officials, Extension Personnel and Volunteer Leaders make no representation or warranty, expressed or implied, about any protective headgear, and cautions riders that death or serious injury may result despite wearing such headgear, as no helmet can protect against all foreseeable injuries in equestrian activities.
The Ohio 4-H Horse Program, Show Committees, Officials, Judges, Extension Personnel and Volunteer Leaders may, at his/her discretion, check a participant’s protective headgear for proper standards. If the youth is found to be wearing unapproved, defective, or improperly fitted headgear, he/she will not be permitted to participate in riding or driving activities until proper headgear is acquired.
