Dining with Diabetes
Dining with Diabetes is a program that was developed through the Cooperative Extension Service in West Virginia. Through a series of three two-hour sessions, participants will learn how to prepare meals that are healthy and use less fat, salt, and sugar without eliminating taste. There will be an opportunity to taste a variety of main dishes, side dishes, and desserts. Participants will receive diabetes information and recipes.

Dining with Diabetes is a series of classes conducted by the Ohio State University Extension and community health partners. This program helps individuals learn strategies to manage their diabetes through menu planning, carbohydrate counting, portion control, label reading and taste testing healthy recipes.
The goals of the Dining With Diabetes program are:
· Presenting healthy versions of familiar foods that are easy to prepare.
· Increasing knowledge about carbohydrates, sugars, sodium, fats, vitamins and minerals in your diet.
· Cooking demonstrations, food tasting and recipe analysis.
· Developing a physical exercise program that matches your lifestyle.
· Using food labels to be a savvy shopper.
· Providing opportunities for participants to share and learn from one another.
Each session will include an education presentation by Karen Homan, R.D., L.D., CDE, Coordinator of Mercer Health Diabetes Self-Management Education Program. Classes will also include a cooking demonstration by Barb Hennard, OSU Extension Educator. Participants will have the opportunity to taste a variety of main dishes, side dishes and desserts. A variety of diabetic information, educational handouts and recipes will be given to those in attendance.
