Hold the dates and make plans to the participate in the 2012 Ohio Beef Cattle School series beginning on January 26, 2012 and continuing on the Thursdays of February 9 and 16, and March 1. Following a theme of "The New Normal," each session will be broadcast "live" beginning at 7 p.m. by many of Ohio's Extension offices via an internet link, and will focus on optimizing efficient beef production in a rapidly changing business and consumer environment. Nothing is sacred as we explore trends in reproduction, genetics, feeds and feeding, targeted marketing, and the opportunities afforded by backgrounding calves versus finishing them in Ohio feedlots.

Specific topics and speakers include these industry respected individuals from across the Midwest. The agenda is:

January 26: speaker - Kevin Dhuyvetter, Extension Specialist, Farm Management, Kansas State University

Topics: Economic Considerations in Beef Cattle Production

February 9: speakers – Dave O'Diam, Certified Angus Beef; Don Knore, Pineland Farms Natural Beef; and Logan Edenfield, United Producers

Topics: Targeted markets and marketing alternatives

February 16: speakers – Dr. Les Anderson, University of Kentucky Beef Extension Specialist and John Grimes, OSU Beef Programs Coordinator

Topics: Genetics, reproduction efficiencies, calving season alternatives, etc

March 1: speaker – Nevil Speer, PHD, MBA, Western Kentucky University

Topic: Meat industry perspective looking to the future including ‘outlook’, Choice/Select spreads, etc.

If interested in attending, more details will be posted here as they become available, or contact your local Ohio State University Extension office to ask if their winter programming plans include hosting the Ohio Beef Cattle Schools.
The dates, locations and registration information for these meetings are available at http://pested.osu.edu/privaterecert.html. Private applicators are required to have three hours of pesticide recertification training every three years to keep their license current.

The meetings will be conducted by OSU Extension educators with expertise in agriculture. Topics include new technologies to address pesticide resistance, drift management and invasive species. Applicators will learn more about effective pesticide management to enhance crop productivity while protecting themselves, the public and the environment.

There is a charge for the meetings, and funds from the pesticide applicator training will be used to support local OSU Extension programs for agriculture. OSU Extension provides research-based, unbiased solutions for issues facing local farmers.

It’s that time of year to start thinking about 4-H for many residents in Clinton County and all over the state! And this is the best time of year for people who haven’t been in the program to learn about 4-H. If you’ve ever wondered how do you join? Is there a fee? What can you take in 4-H? To answer all of these questions and many more we’d like to invite the entire community to the Clinton County 4-H Winter Fair. That’s right, a fair in March with games, animals, food and more.

The 4-H Winter Fair will be at the Fairground on Saturday, March 3th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We can’t promise sunshine and warm weather, but we will have animals, hands on learning, snacks, demonstrations and lots of fun. Everyone is welcome to attend the fair for free.

The Expo Building will be filled with almost every project 4-H members have taken in Clinton County. Each booth will have examples of 4-H projects, books available for each project and a member or volunteer will be there to answer questions. A few examples of 4-H projects include: science, athletics, clothing, Cloverbuds, creative arts, electricity, field crops, fishing, gardening, gun safety, health, home decorating and designing, collectibles, money managements, natural resources, photography, theater arts projects, livestock, horses, dogs and several others.

This is your opportunity to learn about 4-H and ask questions about how to sign up, how much will it cost, where you would meet, what you could take in 4-H, and how much fun it would be to become a member of the Clinton County 4-H program. Bring your parents, grandparents, friends, brothers or sisters and enjoy an exciting day packed full of fun, learning and new opportunities. We hope to see you there.

Winter Fair will be March 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Clinton County Fairground located at 958 W Main Street in Wilmington.

For additional information and questions please call the OSU Extension office at 937-382-0901 or access information online at http://clinton.osu.edu.
